A typical funeral begins with a slow march while the coffin is carried by a horse-drawn hearse, accompanied by a brass band playing somber dirges and hymns. After the memorial service, people on the streets, along with dapper dancers from Social Aid & Pleasure clubs, join the mourners to the cemetery. This group is referred to as the “Second-Line.” The brass band plays with a swing beat to alert mourners that the mood is about to change, then they launch into “When the Saints Come Marching In” to joyfully raise the soul to heaven!
