OSOGBO: ART & HERITAGE

“The Osogbo Art movement was born as a cultural response to colonialism in 20th century art. Artists such as Picasso and Modigliani egregiously appropriated African art ideas for their own benefit and success.”

Sacred Grove

The OSOGBO: Art & Heritage exhibition is a 63-year retrospective of contemporary art from the world-renowned Osogbo School of Art in Nigeria.

The Osogbo School of Art was spearheaded by European scholar Ulli Beier and artist Susanne Wenger in the early 1960s. Along with renowned Nigerian playwright Duro Ladipo, they started the Mbari Mbayo Art Club to provide artistic training to young artists in an effort to restore the strength, beauty, and originality of African Art back to its source.

This collection features over 30 works from progenitors of the Osogbo Art Movement, as well as younger generations who have kept the legacy of Osogbo Art alive.

The collection has been shown in the South and Midwest and will be available for booking after November 2024.
